Another claims it’s cured their anxiety. Someone else is recommending a specific type of magnesium and insisting it’s the only one worth taking.

While some of those conversations have merit, they only tell a small part of the story.

As a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition, I think magnesium deserves far more attention than it gets—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s involved in hundreds of processes that directly impact how we feel every day.

Current recommendations suggest adults require approximately:

  • Men: 400–420 mg daily
  • Women: 310–320 mg daily

However, research published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2026 found that a substantial portion of both children and adults in the United States are not meeting recommended magnesium intake levels.³

Why?

  • Increased consumption of ultra-processed foods

If you’re taking magnesium glycinate or magnesium L-threonate to support relaxation and sleep, taking it approximately one hour before bedtime often works well.⁴˒⁶

If you’re using magnesium citrate to support digestive regularity, taking it with a meal may help improve tolerance and reduce digestive discomfort.⁵

For many people, consistency matters more than timing.

The best time to take magnesium is often the time you’ll actually remember to take it.

Do I Need to Take Magnesium Every Day?

Of course, magnesium is only one piece of the puzzle. Protein intake, fiber, movement, sleep, stress management, and meal timing all matter as well.

This is the piece many people overlook.

There is no universally “best” magnesium supplement. The best option depends on the individual.


My Clinical Takeaway on Magnesium

  • How is their blood sugar regulation?

  • What are their labs telling us?

Magnesium often becomes part of that conversation, but it is rarely the entire conversation.

The goal isn’t simply to take another supplement.

The goal is to understand what your body needs to function optimally and build sustainable habits that support long-term health.
